There are additional rules due to coronavirus that you must follow.

Summary of our rules

  • Do not attend the school unless you have a confirmed coaching place.
  • We are not allowed to have more than 30 people, including children and coaches, at the school during coaching.  Because of this limit:
    • Only one adult is to accompany children from a household.
    • Only children who have a place booked on the coaching will be allowed entry.
  • Do not attend any coaching session if you or any of your household has coronavirus or coronavirus symptoms.
  • Please bring a face-mask in case you need to accompany your child inside to the toilets.
  • Please bring and use hand sanitiser to clean your hands when arriving.
  • Please wait where signed for your coach, we will control access to the coaching areas and ask you about any coronavirus symptoms.
  • When watching the children you’ve brought please keep 2 metres away from adults, coaches and children outside your household.
  • Please do stay in the area, we will need your support in the event of your child requiring first aid or a mechanical issue with their bike.  Adults will also need to help when we perform the clothing, helmet and cycle safety check at the start of each session.
  • When you do attend school we ask that only one adult attends with any children from your family group.
  • You must follow the instructions of any coach or volunteer.
  • You should avoid sharing cars with those outside your household or support bubble.
  • Please arrive no earlier than your allotted time.

How will it work?

Booking your place

  • Book with the club (now closed for this event)
  • We will ask you to include:
  • Your information (email, name, address, contact number)
    • Your child’s information (email, name, address, contact number)
    • An emergency contact
    • Some permission requests for photography for our coach development and club website / social media (you don’t have to allow these but it helps us if we can).
  • Contact tracing information will be retained for 21 days.

On the day

We are looking forward to seeing you.  Please only one adult bring the children with confirmed places from each household.  Park safely either in the school car park or on Severn Avenue.  Please do not obstruct other vehicles or residents’ driveways.  Please do only arrive at the time we ask.  When you’ve got your bike and helmet come over and wait at the edge of the playground, there will be a sign to make it clear where to wait.  While queuing please keep 2m from other household groups.  A coach or volunteer will meet you and guide you to your coaching area.  Adults will be directed where to stand to watch their children.

The coaching

The coaching will be fun, each coach will have a 6 session programme that will run over 3 Saturdays.  The maximum group size in this series will be 5 children per coach, though we may have slightly larger groups if the ability mix requires that.  Coaching will minimise the time that children are closer than 1m apart and children will generally be over 2m apart.

Levels of ability

3 levels of ability will be catered for:

  • Learn to Ride
  • Novice 1
  • Novice 2

The first week will be an assessment week and our qualified coaches will identify the correct group for each child.  Unlike previous years if a child progresses they will remain in the same group for the 6 sessions (we’d then move them up in subsequent coaching).  The reason for this change is to form coaching bubbles for the duration of the 6 sessions.  We plan to run the 6 sessions over 3 weeks, running 2 coaching sessions each Saturday.

What to bring!

  • An adult (just one)
  • The child, or children, with a confirmed place
  • A safe bike with working brakes and gears
  • An approved cycle helmet
  • Appropriate clothing for the weather forecast
  • Gloves are recommended (protects the hands if a child does fall off)
  • Your personal hand sanitiser
  • A mask in case you need to accompany your child to the toilet
  • Drinks and snacks

2019 Summer Road Coaching – Mondays

2019 Summer Road Coaching

The evening Cycling Coaching Sessions for youth riders return  for 2019, run by willing volunteers from the Ribble Valley Juniors Cycling Club.

Mondays 15th April to 19th August at UCLAN Preston Arena, Tom Benson Way, Preston, PR1 1SG.

The sessions will follow a similar format to previous years with the aim to develop riders’ cycle racing skills, from novices to those wishing to compete at a higher level.

The sessions will focus on the key skills needed to be able to participate safely, competently and successfully in road racing events.

(Please download and bring to your first session).

As a community based club run by volunteers we have kept the costs as low as possible.

Novice  –  1 hour  –  £3
Intermediate group  –  1 hour  –  £3 or 2 hours £5
Advanced group  –  2 hours  –  £5

As in previous years, with the aim of improving the focus of the coaching and to cater for a range of abilities, riders will be strictly allocated to one of three groups. Movement between groups will be by coach agreement only. The proposed coaching subjects and what coaches are looking for in order to move riders between groups is shown below. The outline programme is subject to change, for example due to weather conditions.

Criteria for moving between groups.

Due to Bank holidays there are 17 coaching weeks, it is our intention that weeks 9 and 17 will consist of some competitive games and activities based around the coaching already done.

Time Trial Results

  • To be able to take part all riders must wear a suitable, cycling specific helmet and have a bike in safe working order.
