There has been a lot happening since the last newsletter. This newsletter contains items that started as news…. hence the ‘and reviews’ heading .
As we’ve now had the AGM and the first race meetings we thought it about time we told you about some of it.
The club’s AGM took place on Saturday 20th April. After approval of the minutes of AGM 2012 a new committee as follows was elected:
Chair – Sandra Burke
Vice-Chair – Matthew Field
Treasurer – Simon Morris
Secretary – Geoff Ind
Minutes have been circulated and will be available on here on the website but in brief:
- The Officials proposed to co-opt Ivor Armstrong with the title of President. This was unanimously approved.
- The Tracy Walton Memorial award for 2012-3 was presented by Mr Walton to Lydia, in recognition of her quiet determination and on-going enthusiasm.
We had a good turn out of 8 or so riders for the first of the CDNW Youth League rounds at Southport earlier this month.
We asked for a good turnout at Round 2, Preston Arena, and despite some character forming weather, we got it! More than 15 RVJ riders took part. Well done all those who participated.
We have also had some riders out on the Thursday evening CDNW races at UCLAN arena Preston.
Saturday Optional Playground Sessions
For three Saturdays in April and May, Matthew ran coaching sessions in the school grounds. These were optional sessions required to demonstrate practical coaching experience and to prepare riders for the Tuesday sessions using their road bikes. The sessions were surprisingly well attended, with the competitive elements most popular. Only a few older riders opted to go on the club rides.
Monday Evening Rides.
With the improving weather (!) we have re-established the Monday evening rides from Bamber Bridge Leisure Centre on Brindle Road, meeting at 7.30pm and leaving soon after.
At the moment these are a social / improver ride for the adults within the club who wish to support their young riders by being better able to keep up with them. The rides will all be on road and therefore a road bike is preferable. Pace will be adjusted to suit whoever is there- so nobody will get left behind although you can expect an average of 13-15 mph. Lights necessary.
Thankyou to Waitrose we have now been presented with the cheque.
The various initiatives to investigate alternative suppliers have been abortive. Apologies, we know how much this means to members. The club will resolve this unsatisfactory situation as quickly as possible….
A quick reminder that the summer coaching sessions have started up again. Tuesday evenings at 6.00pm at UCLAN sports arena. Started well and just as popular as ever- about 60 riders last week (14 May).
Feedback from the Ribble Valley Juniors session was very positive. The consensus is that we should try for another such session. Meanwhile we have circulated details of current specific opportunities for female riders, and some more advanced sessions. The next NW Cluster session is in late July.
Some of us have been confused by the changes in legislation affecting CRB registration. The Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) and the Independent Safeguarding Authority (ISA) have merged into the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS). CRB checks are replaced by DBS checks.
British Cycling are tasked with managing the new system for the sport. As far as club members are concerned the process starts with a form sent by BC to those whose CRB is approaching 3 years since issue. This form attempts to establish/review the need for a DBS to be issued. Once submitted and reviewed, those who BC decide warrant a DBS check, will receive an application form. This will then need to be reviewed and witnessed- as were CRB forms previously by a BC staff member-previously Alex Scoular.
All coaches, welfare officers, active volunteers and first aiders will need DBS in the opinion of RVJ club officials to underpin Child Protection policies at our Junior Cycling club. New coaches will be issued DBS checks as part of their course.
Next Club Meeting.
Will be held at BB Catholic Club on Monday 3rd June at 7.30pm. Items for agenda include Kit, Planning of Club Activities, etc.
